Bio:
Jaclyn Rea received her PhD from Simon Fraser University (2006) for her work on Canadian attitudes toward Standard English. Specifically, her dissertation investigates the rhetorical force of commonplace statements about language in Canadian dictionary projects and in the Canadian press. Before coming to UBC in 2009, she taught a range of courses at Brock University, including courses on academic writing, rhetorical theory and discourse analysis and was, for a time, the director of Brock’s writing program: Writing, Rhetoric and Discourse Studies. Since coming to UBC, Jaclyn has been involved in a number of initiatives meant to support Arts students’ active participation in university research cultures. She is also involved in two research projects: an investigation of Canadian online responses to the Fukushima nuclear incident and an analysis of social workers’ conceptualizations of their writing practices.
