Learn how UBC's Vantage One program prepared some of our past students for university studies

Ali Reza Gazor (Iran), third year Physics student

One of the benefits of the program I’d have to say is the course material. By our Term 2 midterms, I was helping my direct-entry friends with their homework — they’re all jealous of how much support we get from our professors at Vantage. The professors in Vantage really are the best of the best. The other surprise I guess is my new interest in astronomy. I joined the UBC Astronomy Club and it’s the best group of people. They have a lot of events off campus, I’ve learned a lot about the stars.

Aya Hioki (Japan), UBC Alumnus and former Vantage Arts student

The Vantage program is designed to provide the students with many opportunities for group work and presentations. The experiences that I had through those opportunities were really valuable and helpful to prepare us for our upper years of university life. I remember how hard everyone of us worked on each of our projects. The Capstone conference at the end of Vantage year was especially my highlight where we got to suit up and present our achievements in front of all faculty members, staff and fellow students. The conference helped me build more confidence to transition to the second year of my degree.

Aizhan Myrzabekova (Kyrgyzstan), fourth year Arts student

I was able to apply for the Excellence Award, which I was lucky enough to be accepted for. It covers the full cost of your undergraduate degree at UBC, including living costs, so I'm very grateful. Vantage has certainly opened the door to so many opportunities that I wouldn't have been able to experience otherwise. Since completing the Vantage Arts program, it has opened up my eyes to so many different majors that I hadn't considered before. By studying Political Science and Gender Studies I really want to work towards helping women in Kyrgyzstan.

Felipe David Solano (Ecuador), fourth year Electrical Engineering student

UBC is one of the most prestigious universities, not only in Canada, but also in the world. Before deciding to come to UBC, I did a lot of research about universities and I realized that UBC has a very big support system for international students like me. I didn't have to wait to start my UBC degree, I was able to start with Vantage One. I'm currently a fourth year electrical engineering student, and I would like to get involved in renewable energy in the future.
